Adopt a Chihuahua

Betty and Wilma came to SAAP in October 2016 as part of a hoarding/backyard breeder case. They were part of some 20+ little doggies kept in crate to make puppies. They were not handled often and were (and mostly still are) feral. They have come a long way since that first day here with us. It took 3 days to come out of their crate, and at least 3 months before we could walk into the room without them fleeing for a safe place on opposite side of the room. The winter season was difficult, as they wouldn't go outside and used only potty pads, but once the weather warmed up, they learned how much fun the outside was. I don't believe they had only been outside for quite sometime, if ever. They learned to frolic and play happily together and with my resident dogs. They certainly know "how to dog" between themselves and my residents but still do not trust humans. They get very excited every morning for feeding, jumping and wagging, but will stay back until their bowls are ready for them. They will sleep on the opposite end of the couch or love seat from you and not move, as long as you "ignore" them and don't make sudden moves. These girls are learning that some people are safe, as they are now sleeping on my bed in doggie beds, but still will not allow touching. Wilma has become the braver of the two and will even nose bump and sniff toes as she passes on her way to the potty OUTSIDE! Regular weekly roundups are very stressful for these girls, but are necessary to keep them on track to touching. We wrangle gently to an unescapable corner and slowly pick each up and snuggle for up to 1/2 hour, praising and cooing at them. Once their snuggles are finished, they are rewarded with either lunchmeat or hotdog treats. 

I recommend a VERY patient calm, quiet home with older adult(s), no cats and no children. Other small non aggressive doggies would be fine.

This special adopted will need the patience of a saint and understand their trust may need years to overcome!
